What is Maekake?

MAEKAKE, which are traditional Japanese workwear, has been used for over 200 years. By tying the strap around the waist, workers can protect their backs. ANYTHING still uses looms that are more than 100 years old to weave richly textured, indigo fabric for our MAEKAKE. With its retro feel, it has recently gained in popularity – used as a uniform or as kitchen and outdoor wear.

Who we are

Founded in 2000 by entrepreneur Kazuhiro Nishimura, Anything has been making maekake since 2004. The company still uses the traditional method of production in Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture, which is the last and only remaining place of production in Japan. It is home to nine shuttle looms that were made over 100 years ago, continuing to make authentic, high-quality MAEKAKE for people in Japan and around the world.

How to tie MAEKAKE

Rest the apron on the prominent bone at top of your pelvis. Postpartum mothers should instead set it on the pelvis to make the hip joint stable.

Breathe in deeply, then, release your breath lightly. Pull on the belts crossing your back tightly, then, bring them around to the front.

Lace up the belts securely at the front.
